Copa Action!
Over the weekend, I witnessed some stellar Brazillian Jiu Jitsu action at Jaya Shopping Center in PJ 14, Selangor.
Over 100 participants turned up from all walks of life and differing gyms to compete against one another in a display of grappling and array of combination groundwork!

Ready to Rumble!
There were teams from Penang, Johor and Sabah who came up strong in their respective divisions and a notable contingent from Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore were there to establish a foot hold on the event. Notable competitors that were present at the event were Malaysian Invasion
Middleweight Champion Jing “The Believer” Chong and also Malaysian Invasion Bantamweight Champion Prabu Somanaidu who both won gold in their respective divisions!

Eric "The Mountain" Duncan does not even (need to) try to sprawl when his opponent goes in for the single leg takedown in the absolutes.
Copa Da Malasia staples such as Eric “The Mountain” Duncan was also present and I also got to see Malaysian Invasion stand out Hui Keng Fai compete against a high level competitor.
In terms of competition, it was pretty great, the staff at Copa Da Malasia were very efficient in running the show and made improvements towards the flow of the event.

Professor Pedro Falbo refereeing a blue belt division match.
It was also a very proud moment for the staff of Copa Da Malasia to have a very special guest in the form of Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Raja Muda Selangor Darul Ehsan (His Highness Crown Prince of Selangor) Tengku Amir Shah ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah who officiated and spectated the competition.
A little insight on our DYM Raja Muda Selangor (HH Crown Prince of Selangor) he is the royal patron of the Selangor Youth Community and is a very
passionate person towards the idea and application of youth development and environmental sustainability. His presence at Copa Da Malasia means that there are bigger eyes watching and it is all a matter of time before Copa Da Malasia would make a move towards bigger things should the opportunities arise.

Going in for the single leg takedown.

The Triangle choke or Sankaku-jime
In terms of the level of competition, it was a good level of grappling all around, stand out teams include Doberman BJJ (under BJJ Black Belt Luc Rosseau, based in REPS Johor Bharu), Penang Budo Academy (based in Penang), Monarchy MMA (under BJJ Black Belt Bruninho Barbosa, based in Kuala Lumpur), Muayfit GFT Malaysia (under BJJ Black Belt Pedro Falbo, based in Petaling Jaya) . There were some standouts from outside of Malaysia in the forms of Saigon Jiu Jitsu, Evolve MMA, GFT Singapore and maybe a few more teams I missed out (if so, my sincerest apologies!)

Getting the extension.

Seoi nage; judo throw...well, a split second and a half after!
Here is the Full List of Teams!
Outstanding performances (in the opinion of the writer) includes a stellar seoi-nage game by Judoka Gary Pogan from Penang Budo Academy. In an absolute match between Gary Pogan and Eric "The Mountain" Duncan. It was The Mountain's mistake chasing the Judoka as Gary's swift timing and perfect execution took down The Mountain beautifully.
While as artistic as the technique was, the sheer momentum of the throw and the impact of the landing was monstrous and thus, rendered The Mountain unable to continue due to injury. We wish nothing but a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing him back again on the mats!
Hui Keng Fai showed great defense until being caught in an armbar which he proceeded to fight through and defended well to escape it driving the entire Jaya Shopping Center crowd INSANE. It was a crazy display of grappling between the two (I was unable to get the name of Keng Fai's opponent)
All in all, it was great to see a vast number of competitors both local and international! With Copa Da Malasia growing, it is only a matter of time before Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gets the recognition it so aptly deserves!
